EPISODE 42 » 01|03|2022
Poop: It's more than just something that people find gross, fascinating, or grossly fascinating. In fact, researchers at The Ohio State University are investigating veterinary uses for fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).
In this episode, MVC speaker Dr. Jenessa Winston joins us to discuss how her team is learning how to turn crap into a cure—or at least a very effective treatment—for a variety of illnesses and conditions from parvovirus enteritis to obesity. This is an area of veterinary medicine that is on the verge of exploding (in a good way). Listen in to find out the amazing discoveries being made right now in this cutting-edge field!
Dr. Winston gives an overview of how clinicians and shelters in particular can set up donor programs and use FMT to treat parvovirus enteritis. For an in-depth discussion of the same, please register for Session 183 of the Shelter Animal II - Infectious Disease track on Thursday, Feb. 17.
Dr. Winston is an assistant professor at The Ohio State University, where she also researches microbe-host interactions during health and disease.
When it comes to emergencies, veterinary professionals need to be able to think on their feet and make fast decisions.
